We have two recitals every year, one in early December and one in May. All students are encouraged to participate and present 1-2 pieces that they have learned and enjoyed! The recitals are held at a local church on a Saturday afternoon, and parents and other family members are encouraged to attend to hear what each student has learned and how much they have grown in their music.
The students can participate in the Whitlock Theory Test. The exam tests the student's knowledge of the symbols, styles, and construction of music through written and oral components. Twice a year, the exam is offered at a local university, and the students would take the test with their respective school grades. If the students do well, they receive a medal for their efforts. Several of the students have participated and earned medals already!
Festivals and other performing opportunities are also encouraged throughout the school year. Through the Austin District Music Association, the students can participate in festivals where they will present two polished pieces for a local judge or music professor. Afterwards, they receive a rating and comments on their style, performance, and artistry. These have a wide range of genres and styles from Jazz and Rock, to Hymn Music, Baroque/Classical, and Romantic/Contemporary!
